The South Florida Pharmacy Practice Center (SFPPC), located in Davie, Florida, has a long and rich history in training student pharmacists in the greater Miami/Fort Lauderdale/West Palm area.
Since its humble beginning at the Jackson Towers in Miami in the early 1970s, the South Florida location of the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health (CoPPS, IPH) has grown and expanded to become the largest of the College's experiential teaching sites.
Formally named the Davie Instructional Site in the summer of 2020, the FAMU Board of Trustees at the recommendation of Dr. Johnnie L. Early, II, Dean of the CoPPS, IPH approved the Davie Instructional Site renaming to the "South Florida Pharmacy Practice Center." The name change from instructional site to a pharmacy practice center was recommended to encapsulate the primary location and focus of the facility.
The SFPPC is conveniently located off Highway I-595. The practice center accommodates our learners' experiential needs, from as far north to West Palm Beach and far south to Homestead. At this practice center, student pharmacists matriculate in APPE experiences. In addition, the SFPPC has a long-standing residency partnership with Bristol-Meyers Squibb. Bristol-Meyers Squibb is a global BioPharma company focused on discovering and developing medicines that help patients with serious diseases.
The faculty at the SFPPC provide education to student pharmacists assigned to general medicine, ambulatory care, psychiatry, and other experiences in an affiliated institution. Student pharmacists receive training in various medical settings and gain invaluable expertise applying didactic knowledge to real-life situations. Through participation in health fairs and community events, patient education and monitoring, volunteerism, and inter-professional interactions, our learners gain invaluable experience to become well-respected in their pharmacy careers.
