Ivette Amelia López, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Science and Health Education in the Institute of Public Health at Florida A&M University. Dr. López received her PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida, her MPH from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health in Public and Community Health Services, and her bachelor degree in social work and sociology from Seton Hill University. Dr. López was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, was also raised in the island, and immigrated to the United States to pursue an advanced education. She is, and has been for almost two decades, a dedicated professional in pursuit of health equity for Latinos and other disadvantaged populations in the United States. Her work and research has focused on addressing diverse health problems, principally: HIV/AIDS, STDs, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, breast cancer, physical activity and obesity. Dr. López has had experience at the local, state, national and community settings, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. Her areas of interest include: Latino health, Latina and African American women’s health, cultural and community influences on health protective behaviors, community-based research, health literacy, and higher education racial and ethnic disparities. She resides in Tallahassee, Florida, with her husband, daughter and mother.
