Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) Objectives and Outcomes
IPPE is defined as practice experiences offered in various practice environments during the early sequencing of the pharmacy curriculum for the purposes of providing transitional experiential activities and active learning. IPPEs should instill the philosophy of pharmaceutical care, facilitate and enhance student professionalism, increase student motivation for learning in the didactic curriculum and promote the self-learning process.

  • Building working relationships with providers
  • Conducting patient interviews to obtain patient information
  • Creating patient profiles using information obtained
  • Different roles of a pharmacist
  • Communicating with patients and other health-care providers
  • Provide pharmaceutical care ethically and compassionately
  • Different pharmacy organizations
  • Participating in educational offerings designed to benefit the health of the general public
  • Providing point-of-care and patient-centered services
  • Billing third parties for pharmacy services

Outcome Objectives for the Second-Year Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (P2):
* please note: competencies acquired in P1 experiences will be still be enforced.

  • Processing and dispensing new/refill medication orders
  • Verification of an accurate prescription order
  • Product selection/substitution
  • Performing calculations required to compound, dispense and administer medications
  • Filling a prescription
  • Decision-making and bias
  • Using appropriate sources of information
  • Discuss patient and disease factors that influence drug selection (e.g., allergy, disease state, or medication history
  • Medication errors and prevention
  • Collect accurate and comprehensive drug information from appropriate sources.
  • Identify the patient’s primary complaint(s) and reason(s) for seeking medical care.
  • Identifying patient-specific factors that affect health, pharmacotherapy, and/or disease state management

Outcome Objectives for the Third-Year Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (P3):
* please note: competencies acquired in P1 and P2 experiences will still be enforced.

  • Determine the appropriateness of a drug order or prescription in relation to patient and disease specific factors
  • Formulate appropriate action when the use of a drug is contraindicated or questioned.
  • Assess drug orders and prescription for potential drug-related problems
  • Describe the steps in a systematic approach to solving problems.
  • Generate a patient-specific problem list.
  • Formulate an appropriate action plan when a drug order or prescription presents a potential drug-related problem (e.g., drug interaction, side effect, toxic effect)
  • List patient characteristics that may influence the choice of alternative drug products.
  • Formulate a pharmacotherapeutic regimen to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes (i.e. laboratory and monitoring parameters)
  • Triaging and assessing the need for treatment or referral, including referral for a patient seeking pharmacist-guided self-care
