Overview

The Division of Basic and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers comprehensive programs of course work and research leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences with concentrations in pharmacology/toxicology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and environmental toxicology (PhD degree only).

The courses of study are designed to give students a strong background in modern theoretical principles in the area of concentration and to emphasize the application of these principles in research. Students may pursue research in any of the areas of specialization of the faculty members listed, and the student, in conjunction with the adviser, must propose a program of study, present a tentative thesis/dissertation subject and outline, and select a committee of not less than 3 (MS) or 5 (PhD) faculty members.

The committee will oversee student's progress in research. After completion of course work, the student takes a comprehensive written exam. During the course of their research, students are required to make presentations at national meetings and complete at least one (MS) or two (PhD) papers for publication in refereed scientific journals. Final degree requirements include completion of a thesis (MS) or dissertation (PhD) and a public oral defense of the thesis or dissertation.
