GRADUATE STUDENT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

The Office of Graduate Programs in the FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health can assist graduate learners in identifying external funding offered by various foundations, societies, and governmental agencies. MASTERS/DOCTORAL

National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) Program

Eligibility: Awarded to graduate students seeking research-based masters or doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, including the social sciences.

Duration: 3 years of “early-stage” support

Amount of Award: $32,000 annually plus $12,000 for tuition

Delores A. Auzenne Fellowship

Eligibility: Applicants must have been accepted into a degree seeking graduate (master’s or doctoral) program; demonstrated initiative and qualifications to assure satisfactory progress in pursuing his or her future educational goal; be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States; does NOT have any other assistantship or fellowship for the academic year; and must be enrolled as a full-time student (nine graduate credit hours for fall and spring semesters).

Duration: 1 year

American Association of University Women International Fellowship

Eligibility: Awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported.

Duration: 1 year, renewable for a 2nd year

Amount of award:  $18,000 annually (master); $20,000 annually (doctoral), $30,000 annually (postdoctoral)

PRE-DISSERTATION/PRE-DOCTORAL

Florida Education Fund (FEF) McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program

Eligibility: Applicants must be African American or Hispanic, a U.S. citizen, and hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Since this program is intended to increase enrollment in Ph.D. programs, currently enrolled doctoral students are not eligible to apply.

Duration: 3 academic years (an additional 2 years of support at the same level provided by the participating institution)

Amount of Award: $12,000 annual stipend; annual tuition up to $5,000

Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship

Eligibility: Ph.D. seeking student with a minimum of 3 years to complete current program, committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show evidence of superior academic excellence and must be a African American, Hispanic or Asian Pacific student.

Duration: 1 year with the possibility of renewals for up to 3 years

PhRMA Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Health Outcomes

Eligibility: This award supports full-time, in-residence students (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) who will have completed most of their pre-thesis requirements (at least two years of study) and be engaged in thesis research as PhD candidates by the time the award is active.

Duration: Up to 2 years

PhRMA Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Pharmaceutics

Eligibility: Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must hold a PharmD or a BS or MS from an accredited school in pharmacy or a related area. Applicants should expect to complete the requirements for a PhD in two years or less from the time the fellowship begins.

PhRMA Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Pharmacology/Toxicology

Eligibility: Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must be full-time, in-residence pharmacology or toxicology students enrolled in U.S. schools of medicine, pharmacy, public health, dentistry, or veterinary medicine. Eligible candidates will have completed most of their pre-thesis requirements (at least two years of study) and be engaged in thesis research as PhD candidates by the time the award is activated. Because of high demand for this fellowship, the PhRMA Foundation will accept only one application per academic institution.

Duration: Up to 2 years

PhRMA Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Pharmacology/Toxicology

Eligibility: applicants must 1) hold a Ph.D. degree or appropriate terminal research doctorate in a field of study logically or functionally related to the proposed post-doctoral activities or 2) expect to receive the Ph.D. before activating the award.  Stipends are awarded to support to well-trained graduates from Ph.D. programs who seek to further develop and refine their research skills through formal postdoctoral training. These fellowships are designed for individuals engaged in a multidisciplinary research-training program that will create or extend their credentials.

Duration: Up to 2 years

Amount of Award: $50,000 – $60,000

American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (APFE) Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Health Outcomes Disparities

Eligibility: Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; enrolled in a full-time graduate Ph.D. program in pharmaceutical science which is administered by, or officially affiliated, with an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy in the United States; completed at least 3 semesters of study completed in their current Ph.D. program by the application due date; and have no more than 3½ years remaining to obtain the Ph.D.

Research focus must be on either a disease area that disproportionately impacts underserved population or on reducing healthcare disparities and improving health outcomes for underserved populations in the United States. Examples of this research could include: sickle-cell anemia, asthma, HIV/AIDS, maternal and infant mortality, access to medication, etc.

Duration: 1 year

Department of Defense (DoD) National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program

Eligibility: Awarded to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. dual citizens who intend to pursue a doctoral degree aligned to the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research and development at a U.S. institution of their choice. Graduate Students (1st year, 2nd year); Recent Master’s Degree Recipients; Pre-Doctoral Students (1st year, 2nd year)

Duration: Lasts for 3 years and pays full tuition and all mandatory fees;

Amount of Award: $38,400 annually; a $5,000 travel budget over the Fellow’s tenure for professional development; and up to $1,200 a year in health insurance.

Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program

Eligibility: Awarded to graduate students currently pursuing Ph.D. degrees in areas of physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, or specific areas of environmental sciences that are aligned with the mission of the Office of Science are eligible to apply for the supplemental research awards provided by the SCGSR program.

Duration: 3 to 12 consecutive months

Amount of Award: Provides supplemental awards to support part of a graduate student’s thesis research to be conducted at a DOE laboratory/facility. Each awardee is eligible to receive a monthly living stipend (up to $3,000 monthly) and an inbound/outbound transportation reimbursement benefit (up to $2,000 per award).
